🏡 We Can End Housing Voucher Segregation in Milwaukee County

Everyone deserves a safe place to live, regardless of race, zip code, or how they pay their rent.

But in Milwaukee County, families using Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) still face discrimination, even though a 2018 law was meant to protect them. Without real enforcement, much of Milwaukee remains off-limits to families with vouchers, fueling housing segregation and limiting opportunity.

It’s time to change that.

Our new campaign to End Housing Voucher Segregation in Milwaukee County is focused on closing the gap between Milwaukee County’s source of income protection law and its lack of enforcement.

Here’s what we’re calling for:

  1. Enforce the law. Milwaukee County must uphold its existing fair housing protections, just as Dane County already does.

  2. Fund investigations. The County should increase funding for undercover fair housing testing to hold landlords accountable for voucher discrimination.

When these protections are enforced, more families will have access to safe, affordable housing  and our communities will be stronger and more inclusive.

Why This Matters

  • ZIP code shouldn’t determine opportunity. In majority-Black neighborhoods like 53218, there are over 1,200 vouchers in use, while in majority-white neighborhoods like 53217, there are only about 15.

  • Families are being denied choice and opportunity  not because of income, but because of bias and lack of accountability.

  • Together, we can end housing voucher segregation and make Milwaukee County’s fair housing laws real.
