Shared Struggles, Standing with Immigrant Communities

March 21, 2025

Citizenship and residential segregation intersect in ways that drastically impact access to rights, opportunities, and quality of life. With threats to birthright citizenship and against our immigrant neighbors taking shape as official policy, Redress is taking on a call to action to organize in solidarity with tenants in Aurora, Colorado, a suburb of Denver, during these challenging times.

Decades ago, Black and Chicano people across the Denver area were prevented from buying their dream homes and were confined to disinvested neighborhoods due to discriminatory policies and practices, including the use of covenants that placed restrictions on non-white homebuyers. Today in Aurora, our immigrant neighbors are being unjustly vilified, demonized, and criminalized. Redress remains steadfast in supporting, protecting, and building the power of these valued community members, who bring richness and vibrancy to our neighborhoods. Redress has been working with immigrant neighbors who are being evicted from their homes despite years of documented complaints against CBZ Management for unlawful conditions.

On January 13th, Redress, East Colfax Community Collective, and Housekeys Action Network Denver held a rally at the courthouse where policymakers from the City of Aurora decided the fate of the residents of CBZ Management’s 60-unit Edge of Lowry apartments. The rally was a direct action designed to hold CBZ Management accountable for allowing their buildings to be overwhelmed by trash, sewage leaks, rodent infestations, and mold and to demand that the city create a robust, clear relocation process for tenants living at the Edge of Lowry so that no tenants are left unhoused when the apartment building is closed.

The city condemned the building, and community organizations and members are helping to relocate tenants. Redress is supporting those efforts and continuing to organize with the tenants. As Redress Denver Campaign Organizer Jon Marcantoni said during the rally, “Together, we can rectify past and present injustices, but only by recognizing the humanity in each of us.”
