The unaddressed wounds and division caused by residential segregation continue to impact communities across the United States. As of 2018, the average white resident in the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas still lived in a 71 percent white neighborhood; the average Black resident lives in a 45 percent Black neighborhood. The Black homeownership rate in the U.S. stood at 44.1 percent in December 2020; the white homeownership rate stood at 74.5 percent. Segregation's exact legacy and history, however, vary by locale. Communities are enriched and strengthened when segregation is addressed, and residents have equitable access to opportunity.
Residential segregation is a century-old issue that we can’t afford to allow to persist. Every day we wait is another day too long.
Your contribution allows us to work in deep partnership with local communities to repair the harm caused by intentional policies, institutions, and actors that segregate communities. The Redress Movement researches solutions, educates communities, organizes people, and pushes for change to redress segregation. Your contribution will advance our work to redress deep and longstanding systems of segregation by:
- Educating people about the history and impact of residential segregation through research and policy tools and popular education. A $50 gift allows access to research databases, archived documents, and public records to document the history of segregation in every community and create resources for redress.
- Mobilizing communities and building power to launch community-led campaigns and actions that redress segregation in their neighborhoods. A $100 gift allows community organizers to table at community events, inviting people into the movement, providing resources, and educating on redressing segregation.
- Shifting the narrative to create public will that demonstrates the world we envision is possible through collective action to redress past harms. A $25 gift allows Redress’ Digital Organizer to amplify the mission, reach new audiences, and grow the movement.
- Winning redress victories that provide material change for the individuals and families impacted by the legacy of residential segregation. A $1,000 gift provides the technology needed to mobilize communities to action, create meaningful relationships, and deepen the engagement of all Redress neighbors.
Every contribution, no matter the amount, allows us to connect with communities to repair harm and use collective power to redress segregation in communities nationwide.
With your gift today, we’re one step closer to building a country where our zip code no longer predetermines our life chances, where every neighborhood has plenty of resources for us and our children, and where the opportunity to choose where we live - and live how we choose - is not limited by bad policy, bad economics, or bad actors.
